In which Agent Mathers introduces her investigation and Bob explains the purpose of his recordings. TranscriptMathers: For the director. Agent Jessica Mathers, submitting audio evidence for case file 79-PG-[static]. What follows are recordings recovered from the apartment of Robert Abrams on the afternoon of May 17, 2027. Care has been taken to arrange them in apparent chronological order, beginning with six recovered cassette tapes and then continued as audio files stored on Abrams' computer. The earliest tape relevant to this case references the disappearance of Richard Fielding as a fairly recent event; this would place the tape's recording as somewhere in 2007 or possibly early 2008. For ease of reference, the tapes have been numbered in sequence.
Tape one, side one. Abrams: I've decided to keep a record of everything I...God, I should have written something down for this. I have decided to investigate the things I have begun to learn about, to keep track of things for myself and just in case, well. Just in case. So if you are finding this, and you are not me, my name is Bob Abrams. I have, in recent years, become aware that there is, well, I guess I always believed there was a spiritual side to reality, but you know, I always thought it was something we didn't really understand, that no one really understands. But I think, now, that I was wrong. There are people who know far more about the supernatural than they tell the rest of us, and this, this...secrecy, it's dangerous. I know it's done something terrible to Lori, whatever she found, it changed her. That was confirmed, Matteson admitted it, the bastard, but. Okay, I started this recording to make a record of what I already know, I need to focus on that. A couple years ago, this guy, John Matteson, he came into our lives. Lori, she was a friend of mine, I'd known her forever, you know, and she took this interest in the guy. It seemed innocent enough at first, but she started to change. And Beth and I, we should have been more involved. We knew something was wrong, but we didn't want to press, I guess, but Mark, he wasn't going to let it go that easily. I don't know what happened. He went to talk to her about it one night, and the next thing we heard was that he had died in a car accident that night. But that wasn't, I mean, accidents can happen to anyone, but the thing they said happened, it just didn't sound like him. And then Lori, you know, she just got more and more distant, and then suddenly one day she breaks up with Matteson and goes into hiding and by the time we found out what had happened to her she was gone. I don't know where she went, but she left. I think, whatever happened to her, whatever she found, or whatever found her, I think it killed Mark. And I want answers, but the only person who seems to have any answers is Matteson, and I can't trust him. Not anymore. Not after what happened to Rick. Rick trusted him! And Charles trusted him, and I trusted him, and then they go off to some cabin, you know, Matteson and his new girlfriend and Jackie, who also knows more than she's telling, and Rick, they go off to this cabin, and then the others come back without Rick. And the police, you know, they're looking for Rick as a missing person, but Charles confronted Matteson about it and he confessed that Rick was taken by...something. He isn't just lost, he's somewhere, I guess somewhere in the spiritual world, or whatever. He's gone, like really, truly gone. And all of this, it all centers on Matteson, who apparently knows way more about any of this than he's telling any of us, and I can't. I can't just let this keep happening. Charles, he wants to forget the whole thing, he wants to never talk about the supernatural again, but it's too dangerous. Someone has to do something. Someone has to find the truth. So that's what I'm doing. What I know so far. Jackie Veracruz is a witch, she knows about magic and she casts magic and that's a whole thing that really happens, and I don't know how many witches there are out there but she acts like this is all normal, so there must be a lot. And Matteson, I don't know what his deal is, but he can apparently see ghosts and break magic, whatever that means. So that's a thing that exists. And ghosts, and portals to other realms, and dark cults, they're all real. I don't know what else is real, I kinda have to assume everything, you know? Vampires? Sure, why not. Might as well. I just. I'm going to begin digging, and I know Charles doesn't like it, but that just means that I have no one else to talk to about this stuff right now, so, I'll do this. I'll keep a record, and then I can always go back to it, and i can talk through what I'm figuring out, and if something happens to me, like it did with Lori, and Mark, and Rick, then. Then it won't be lost. This story won't be lost. People will know what's really out there, and what it did to me, and what it did to them.
